We had previously, in 2018, had a tour to Phillip Island to catch the nightly Penguin Parade.
It was a "once in a lifetime experience"! That's what I say whenever I have an experience, and then say, "never again! Once in this lifetime is enough!"
The Penguin Parade of Phillip Island is a once in a lifetime event.
If you're lucky or smart, you might even manage to skip it in this lifetime.
If the point is to get a really good view of penguins, the Penguin Parade at Asahiyama Zoo would be more satisfying!
"You were at Phillip Island? Did you see my cousin, Percy? He's about this high, and waddles." |
"Mind the Penguin poop! OMG, I almost stepped in it!" |
Unlike the Phillip Island experience, these penguins are herded by the Zookeepers, in broad daylight, and there's no question of disturbing the natural setting for the penguins because they are already in a zoo.
Penguins and would-be paparazzi! |
So of course the smart ones will try to make a run for it!
"You'll never take me alive!" |
So, if you wanna almost be able to see penguins in the wild, then sure, brave the cold and the dark and try to catch the penguins of Phillip Island. You MIGHT enjoy it (different strokes for different folks).
But if you have a small child and you want an assured experience that is convenient for you and your family, and you happen to be in Hokkaido, or more specifically, in or near Asahikawa, drop by the Asahiyama Zoo and catch their Penguin Parade. In terms of being able to actually see the penguins, and to take pictures of them, it is much better.
Another place to see penguins up close is the Antarctic Centre near the Airport of Christchurch (Sudima), New Zealand. I should post the videos. And that blogpiece! It's 10 years late!
